General Installation Guidelines:

  1. Height and Placement:
    • Location: The alarm must be located at least 3 feet, but not more than 10 feet from the appliance, measured horizontally
    • Near the Ceiling: Natural gas is lighter than air, so detectors should be installed near the ceiling, typically 6-12 inches from it, or according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Avoid Obstructions: Ensure detectors are not obstructed by furniture or curtains and are placed away from windows, doors, and vents to avoid false readings.
    • Exception (created based on feedback to the proposed rule): Where the existing space does not allow for installation at least 3 feet from a fuel-gas-burning appliance, or the manufacturer’s instructions or NFPA 715-2023 require installation in a different location, alarm installations must be placed in accordance with the manufacturer’s or the NFPA 715 location requirements
    • The alarm must be kept in good working order
  2. Maintenance and Testing:
    • Regular Testing: Test natural gas detectors regularly, at least once a month.
    • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer or when detector show law battery
    • Detector Replacement: Replace detectors according to the manufacturer's recommended lifespan.
  3. Compliance and Inspection:
    • Regular Inspections: Schedule regular inspections to ensure all natural gas detectors are functioning properly.
    • Record Keeping: Maintain records of natural gas detector installations, maintenance, and inspections as required by law.

By following this checklist, you can ensure compliance with local codes and enhance the safety of building occupants by effectively detecting natural gas leak
